The Dangers of Sitting

Oh, the pleasures of sitting! Coming huffing and puffing from work and plonking yourself down on the couch. Greater pleasures do not exist. If you also think the same, then perhaps it is time to change your views. Human beings were not meant to sit for long periods of time. Homo sapiens walked long distances in search of food. Sitting down was a life hazard, as there could be attacks from wild animals at any point. Even in the pre industrial age, most people were involved in manual labor, and were thus on their feet nearly all waking hours. But with the advent of technology, the whole scenario changed. Sitting became more and more prevalent.

Sitting for long periods of time may lead to increases in obesity, cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar, causing adverse effects in health. It has been found that prolonged sitting can lead to diabetes, deep vein thrombosis, cancer and cardiovascular diseases, besides others. Most people don’t sit in the proper posture, which can lead to aches and pains in the body, and can also lead to long term skeletal or muscular issues.

People are getting increasingly aware about the dangers of sitting. They are walking as much as possible, taking breaks from sitting frequently, and also using standing desks at work. And while sitting may be pleasurable for you, excess of any pleasure proves harmful!
